Amnesty International Poland took action against the demolition of Palestinian homes

Members of Amnesty International Poland were collecting signatures for a petition addressed to the Israeli Minister of Defence, Ehud Barak, demanding an end to the demolition of Palestinian homes.

The event took place on 19th January in central Wroclaw and was focused around the case of Hadidiya village Bedouin community to emphasize the widespread disregard for law by the Israeli Army. At the beginning of February petition with collected signatures was sent to the Israeli Minister of Defence.

The Israeli Army ordered demolition of 21 homes and other properties in the Occupied Territories accusing the owners of not having the construction permit.

The village of Hadidiya is located in zone C (the Occupied Territories are divided into 3 zones) where the Israeli authorities do not issue building permits for permanent constructions such as roads concrete houses. [1]

Moreover, the demolition orders include a clause stating that if the Palestinians demolish their houses themselves they will not be charged with any additional costs.

Abdul Rahim Hussein Biszarat who lives in Hadidiya told Amnesty International: ‚They keep telling us we have to obtain [construction] permits but what exactly do we need the permits for? For a tent? A tent will not shelter us from the wind and might be blown away by it. If I am issued with a permit to construct a building I will cover all costs and prove my property rights’.
